ZGMF-X10A Freedom is a humanoid mobile suit (MS) appearing in the Japanese mecha science fiction anime series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. It is the mobile suit piloted by the protagonist, Kira Yamato, in the latter half of the story.
What sets this machine apart from previous mobile suits is its power source. ZAFT engineers successfully developed an anti-neutron jammer, allowing nuclei to still split even under the influence of the jammer. Equipped with a nuclear engine, this solved the problem of rapid energy consumption caused by the dual operation of the PS armor and high-powered beam weapons. Because it is nuclear-powered, the machine's energy supply is theoretically semi-limitless unless nuclear fuel is exhausted. This makes the ZGMF-X series, equipped with a nuclear engine, the strongest representative of CE71.
This mobile suit boasts unparalleled firepower compared to other mobile suits. In addition to the MA-M20 "Wolf," a beam rifle that continues the standard Gundam weaponry, the MMI-M15 "Sailfish" electromagnetic cannons on its left and right hips are live-fire weapons. Two MA-MO1 "Lizard" beam sabers are housed in pods at the turret ends. The large wings on its back provide excellent stability, balance, and heat dissipation, and are equipped with the M100 "Whale" plasma beam cannons, which are normally folded inside the wings and represent the suit's highest-output armament. Furthermore, the mobile suit's computer incorporates a multi-target lock-on system, capable of locking onto and attacking multiple enemy aircraft simultaneously. The pilot, "Super Coordinator" Kira Yamato, developed the renowned technique of firing all weapons simultaneously (a true secret technique) using this system. To simultaneously utilize all the mobile suit's weaponry to hit an enemy aircraft is something likely only Kira Yamato, piloting this mobile suit, could accomplish. Powered by a nuclear engine, the machine boasts high output and maneuverability, and can fire without restraint, making it a versatile machine for medium and close range.
As one of ZAFT's newest and most advanced mobile suits in CE71, this machine was originally intended to be piloted by Isaac Joule, son of ZAFT Supreme Council member Ezalia Joule and pilot of the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam. However, with the assistance of her father, Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Klein, Lacus Clyne delivered the machine to Yamato Hoshino from a ZAFT hangar, and from then on, Yamato Hoshino exclusively piloted it. Yamato Hoshino's exceptional performance was fully utilized, resulting in brilliant combat achievements and earning the machine immense fame in military circles worldwide, making it a legendary machine. Even in CE73, due to the Junius Treaty prohibiting the use of nuclear energy in military applications, this machine with its nuclear engine remained a monster. Compared to the new "next-generation" series machines of the time, it still appeared somewhat weak. Combined with Yamato Hoshino's superior combat abilities, this resulted in the machine being virtually invincible in the early stages of the war, achieving an astonishing feat of being worth a thousand men. Although the machine was eventually shot down by the Pulse Gundam piloted by ZAFT's Gunshin Asuka, the numerous legends and achievements it created set a threshold that many later generations could not surpass.
